How to download the file from Instagram
  1. Open Instagram → Settings → Accounts Center.
  2. Your information and permissions → Download your information.
  3. Export to device → Customize information.
  4. Select only Connections / Followers and following. Everything else just makes the ZIP larger.
  5. Choose JSON as the format.
  6. Choose All time as the date range. A shorter range creates an incomplete file.
  7. Wait for the email and drop the ZIP here. Exports containing media also work; photos and videos are ignored.
  8. You can also drop the followers_and_following folder or only followers_1.json and following.json.

These counts come from the file, not Instagram. If the export used a short date range, request it again with All time.
